"Already Over" by Red from End Of Silence

"It's already over, now"—it being the singer's flight from God.

Yes, this is a Christian song. Any readers uninterested in CCM (Contemporary Christian Music), try coming back Wednesday.

"Already Over" focuses on the song's narrator coming back to God. He tried to "run away", but he couldn't. God wouldn't let him. The song's therefore a reminder of how God "chastises every son whom He receives" (Hebrews 12:5-6, ESV).

Red is one of those bands that has far better music than you expect. On the surface, they're nothing special, except that their music actually melds together well without sounding like carbon copies of fifteen other Christian rock band. Then you listen more closely and realize that they're combining influences from other genres, like post-grunge and heavy metal. If I had to pick one band to compare the sound to, I'd have to say Breaking Benjamin. (Who I just realized I've never reviewed. I'll have to remedy that.)

"Already Over" combines a steady beat with an electronic "wet" sound and delicate piano in an interesting combo, with the strain coming from the singer's voice. Then, come the chorus, the music wells into definite rock. It ebbs and flows well—unusually well for Christian rock… which I've said about a few different Christian rock bands I've found, lately, so maybe the quality of Christian rock is improving in general.

The singer, Michael Barnes, also sounds like a lot of the popular rock singers, with his clear younger voice, but he also sometimes screams. (In limited places, for emphasis.) Again, nothing remarkable in itself, but he knows what he's doing. He actually sings with emotion, and he doesn't harm the song by melodramatic or poorly-placed breathing.

Overall, the song's worth a listen if you're interested in rock or metal music, particularly male-fronted. But if you aren't a Christian, I doubt you'll like the song's message, so only give it a try if you don't mind ignoring lyrics.
