"Hey There Delilah" by Plain White T's from Every Second Counts

"Someday I'll pay the bills with this guitar" oddly sums up both the song and the situation surrounding it. Originally produced for the album All That We Needed, nothing came of the song originally (or of that album), but then an acoustic version was rereleased early this year on the album Every Second Counts. "Hey There Delilah" ended up on top charts in the U.S. and then the band went international.

The song's from the perspective of a guy with an unrequited long-distance infatuation. Vocalist Tom Higgenson never had a relationship with Delilah DiCrescenzo—who, frankly, finds it unnerving to have a major song written about her—and he only met her once.

The best way for me to describe the music of "Hey There Delilah" is… calm, soothing. It's mostly Tom Higgenson singing with guitar accompaniment. There's not much creativity to it, but it's supposed to be simple. I'm reminded of Jars of Clay and for some reason a bit of Green Day. Higgenson sings with a clear young-sounding voice that reinforces the Jars of Clay comparison.

Overall, it gets repetitive with the "Oh, it's what you do to me" chorus, but it's certainly an intriguing look into a long-distance crush. (Forgive me for never having had one.) But it expresses a mixture of dreams of fame and of fondness for Delilah. If you like acoustic songs, give it a listen.
