"When Cannons Fade" by Bolt Thrower from Those Once Loyal

"When cannons fade", the horror of what happened in the war remains in those who survive. And that's the point of this particular song by Bolt Thrower, a British band that often sings about war and its consequences.

By request, I'm reviewing this particular song, so please correct me if a comment I make on the genre ends up not quite correct. My brother's pretty much the source of my exposure to death metal, which in my experience is pretty much power metal meets growling.

If you're familiar with the Nightwish song "10th Man Down", take the roughest parts of that song, and you get an idea of what this song sounds like. Maybe I just don't have enough exposure to it, but growling sounds alike to me.

The music's rough and harsh to match the growling, which in turn meshes well with the song's dark topic of the long-term psychological consequences of war. It's suitable.

None of the lyrics or vocals sound like the band was trying too hard or wasn't sure what they were doing. (Which is good, because the band's about as old as I am, so they've had plenty of practice.) That in itself puts it as a nice example of the genre, in my opinion.

Overall, not a good listen unless you like harsh metal music and growling vocals. If you do, it's a nice choice to listen to, with appropriate lyrics. Otherwise, you might end up with a headache.

Lyrics: 4/5
