"Long ago, Far away… / In the mist of yesterday" (sic)
Blackmore's Night, a band created by the duo Ritchie Blackmore and Candice Night, has certainly been making music for "a long time" now, nearly 20 years.
The song "25 Years", though, follows the duo's practice of focusing on the medieval and Renaissance eras. It sounds like somebody had a terrible dream—or did something terrible that she convinced herself was a dream—and has lost so much of her life to that, despite another trying to help her. But then, "Nothing is ever as it seems". It's a perfect capture of how someone can be haunted by something that happened oh so long ago.
I think of a noblewoman who had someone who loved her, but then lost her dowry, leaving the man unable to marry her—but that idea's likely colored by what I tend to read. The band kindly puts the lyrics on their site, if you want to look for yourself. (I love when bands do thoat!)
The music's medieval folk rock and even includes a variety of medieval instruments to fit their themes. Various instruments aren't just added willy-nilly, either—everything melds perfectly. Considering Ritchie Blackmore started making music 50 years ago, he's had enough practice to warrant that.
The music has a nice flowing tempo without being chipper. It's catchy and gorgeous, if you like folk or rock at all, check it out. (Fans of the filk songs I've reviewed should like this.)
Candice Night isn't a chore to listen to, either. She sings beautifully, reminding me a bit of Enya, actually. It's a mature alto—I'm actually uncomfortable if I try to sing along with her. (I'm more the clear soprano type.)
Overall, it's a fantastic folk rock song that you should like something about, even if it's just how the odd instruments get used in there, and I'm not saying that just because I'm a fan.
