Rock Choir is an organisation that encourages youngsters to sing by, as their name suggests, bringing a rock (and pop, and gospel) influence to choral singing. Their first album features a number of well-known classic tracks, performed with standard but catchy backings of guitar and vocals, whilst in each song one vocalist takes the ‘lead’. This means that none of the songs are really traditionally choral in performance, but the results are impressive none-the-less.
‘Somebody to Love’ is a well-known track perfectly suited to this kind of presentation. The narrator, obviously, is looking for somebody, and asks “Lord can anybody help me find somebody to love”. The tone is not needy, however; the singer is strong despite her longing, claiming “I ain’t gonna face no defeat”. Whilst the lyrics do say “Lord”, the content isn’t either religious or offensive, so I doubt anyone would find any real issues with it.
The accompaniment is quite fast and insistent, carrying the listener through the song and making it catchy. The backing vocals are simple but solid. The ‘lead’ singer, however, is very impressive, bringing a slight gospel lilt to a powerful, clear voice that is very appealing to listen to.
Whilst this classic song is well known, this presentation is unusual, and promises to fulfill its goal of attracting young people to singing. For the listener, the album is light relief, fun and very tempting to sing along to. If any of the styles used appeal to you, you’ll probably enjoy this, while the catchy style should prove appealing to looking for a slightly different spin on well-known songs.
