"You and I walk a fragile line", "but I never thought I'd live to see it break…"
The song's narrator knew all along that the relationship was one mistake away from the relationship collapsing, but she never thought it would actually do so. She's now "Haunted" by the loss, knows she's "holding onto nothing". She tries to move on, but she still wishes for him she lost.
It's a nice testament to how fickle emotions can be and how they can affect us even when we know the emotions need to leave. The song focuses on the narrator being "Haunted" by the lost relationship, even though she knows it's gone and not coming back. The lyrics work perfectly, for what the song is.
But the song stays in the lament and doesn't present where the narrator's going on from there, which keeps it from being anything special.
Taylor Swift's vocals aren't jaw-dropping, but they're appealing and fit the song well. She doesn't sound astounding, but she actually sings rather than twangs her song.
That leaves the music. It's… well, it's Taylor Swift. Country with a bit of rock. There are some strings in there, which pleases my ear big-time, but even I don't care for the song's standard sound, though the surface has a lot of things I like. It just… sounds like she's trying to hard. The acoustic version has a far "cleaner" sound, which I enjoy a lot.
Overall, it's a good example of pop country. If you're interested in the genre, it's a good example.
