‘Good Ol Fashioned Love’ is the title track of the Overtones’ new album. Their music is what has been described as part of the current ’50’s revival’ of ‘doo wop’ style music. And yes, in some ways that is as cheesy as it sounds. But this track is unusual because the song is new, written by the band themselves to slot in alongside their versions of traditional songs.
This song's style as written easily fits in with the other songs. The vocals of the group are what their work is built on, and they are smooth and light and pleasant to listen to. The style is decidedly upbeat and ‘feel-good’. This makes it easy to listen to, but means that there is little emotional nuancing. Apart from some very mild percussion (is that actually a triangle?) the only accompaniment is the group vocals. The tune is quite catchy.
The lyrics are as inoffensive as the title sounds. The singer is so strongly attracted to a girl he has seen that he has “been staring at you all night long”. However, she seems to be oblivious to his attentions, prompting him to ask “What do I have to do?” to get her attention. However, in order to woo her (and that phrase seems appropriate here), he sticks to promising her his eternal devotion (“No other will ever come between us”) and of course “Good ol’ fashioned love”.
For its genre, I think this track stands up well to traditional renditions. But the genre is innately dated and cheesy, and as such has a limited appeal. I find it hard to review, because although I rather like it and it suits my musical taste, I don’t think many people will agree. It sounds harsh, but the whole genre is something that your grandmother is probably familiar with and will like. The song is a good representation of the genre, and proves that solid new tracks can be written within it, but that doesn’t mean it will change the marginal nature of the style. There is absolutely nothing to take offense with, but nothing to rave about either. Unless you already like this type of music, or really are looking to try something new, this probably isn’t going to be for you.
